Optimizing for Intent, Not Engagement: Why AyatFlow Doesn't Have a Name of the Day Widget
When building an Islamic app, the standard playbook tells you to add engagement loops. Here is why we built the 99 Names feature differently.
When you build an app today, there's a strong temptation to add features that constantly demand the user's attention. Notifications, daily randomizers, streak counters—features designed to keep you scrolling.
When we decided to add the Asma-ul-Husna (The 99 Names of Allah) to AyatFlow, we could have built a "Name of the Day" widget.
But AyatFlow's goal isn't to artificially inflate how much time you spend on the site. Our goal is to provide a beautiful, reliable tool that respects your time.
Here is how we built the 99 Names feature with that philosophy in mind.
1. Everything in One Place
We didn't build a complex new dashboard just for the Names. Instead, we integrated them directly into AyatFlow's main Omnibox.
If you type "The Merciful", "Ar-Rahman", or the Arabic text, AyatFlow's Omnibox recognizes what you are looking for. It takes you right to the result, saving you clicks and time.
2. The "Flashcard" Artifact
When you select a Name, we don't output overly complex, hard-to-read calligraphy. We generate a beautiful, clear flashcard:
- Large, highly legible Arabic text.
- Accurate English transliteration (e.g., Ar-Raḥmān).
- The clear English meaning.

It’s designed specifically for creators making content for social media or educators building slides, who need high-fidelity graphics with correct shaping without fighting with their design software.
3. A Focus on Accuracy
To ensure the highest quality, we sourced our English transliterations and meanings directly from classical scholarly works, primarily relying on Imam Al-Ghazali's foundational text Al-Maqsad Al-Asna (The Ninety-Nine Beautiful Names of God).
For the Arabic script, we use reliable, standard digital formats so that the letters consistently connect correctly, whether you are on a phone or a 4K monitor.
We also added a quiet disclaimer in the editor: "A widely transmitted enumeration of the 99 Names." We want to be transparent that we are providing a standard list, not claiming to be the ultimate theological authority.
Respecting Your Time
Instead of adding bloat, we designed a tool you can rely on. You come to the site, you find exactly the Name you need, you create your beautiful image, and you move on with your day.

Building with restraint is harder than building features, but it is the only way to build trust.
